Wishing You A New Level of Hope in 2011 and Video

As we approach New Year's Eve on tomorrow, I feel that I must send you words of encouragement and hope in some form that you can actually see and pass on if you feel led to do so.

We all know that our economy in America is still recovering and many, young and older, are still trying to put the pieces back together, but I am wishing you a new level of hope in 2011 that will take you to places you've never thought possible. I know this will be your time if you allow yourself to believe and get into action.

On New Year's Eve, before you go out with friends, family, or loved one, make sure to take a moment to yourself and reflect on how far you've come and write down some of the things you hope to achieve in 2011.
Keep them simple, from love, finances, to family, and stick to them. Throw out of your mind the fad on 'New Year's Resolutions' and let's keep them realistic and true to yourself because no one knows you better than you.

Out of this exercise, you will be able to build a new level of hope in 2011, to share with others as you move forward throughout the year because we work on relationships and those relationships that we build are meant to be in our lives for a reason. As you see those changes, for the better, you can always come back to this post and share them with me. I would love to read them and share them with others.

Here's an awesome video on H-O-P-E! Enjoy! Blessings, Selena Brown.

Senior Wisdom Video and Two (2) Whole Days Left for 'Give A Little in 2011' Giveaway

Hello Everyone!

The New Year is soon approaching and I thought that I should send you a senior Wisdom Video from some special senior citizens who showed how far they've come to help you prepare for the New Year of 2011!

And, here's a couple of my pointers to self and to you, for personal reflection time:

1. As we enter into this new year, let's take the time to focus on our own goals and dreams with fresh eyes, knowing that all things are possible. I can support this 100%!
2. I pray that we understand how important it is for change to occur in our lives. We must go through planned and unexpected change, in order to reach the level where we were chosen to be.
3. Lend a hand to someone who is of senior age in our life or a complete stranger. They would greatly appreciate it and remember that senior citizens have lived life long enough to know how to get through the little difficulties that we think are so major, but in reality are a piece of cake to resolve.
4. Make sure to give as much or more, this year, than we receive because it will go a long way when we really need a helping hand. I will be putting this into action on January 1st, so jump on board!
Now enjoy this YouTube Wisdom Video and also don't forget to enter our first act of giving in 2011, with the 'Give A Little in 2011' Giveaway, ENDING in TWO (2) WHOLE DAYS...Friday, December 31st, 11:59pm/EST!

Who knows, you may be one of the two (2) lucky winners to receive $100. TheOldFolksKnowBest.com understands that by giving a little to begin the year, it will come back 10x greater in so many different ways and also because it feels so good to share and make someone elses life a little easier.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Just A Little Article I Wrote...How To Be an Outstanding Caregiver For Senior Citizens

On yesterday, I had the opportunity to write a great article for, CarenetLA, an outstanding caregiving company who provides in-home, non-medical care to senior citizens in the Los Angeles, CA areas. I thought it was a real treat for people to understand what it takes to be an outstanding caregiver to senior citizens from a REAL caregiver's perspective.

Now, I realized that some of my new subscribers in the 'Give A Little Away in 2011' Giveaway, are caregivers to either a family member or other clients. So I thought it would be great to share the article with you!

Personally, I love CarenetLA as a family-owned and operated company. If you are a senior citizen or have a senior family member that needs a little help being more independent and live in the Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley areas, I would look into what they have to offer and give them a call. Here's their blog with all the contact information too at: www.Carenetla.blogspot.com
__________________________________________________________________________________
So...without further delay, my article to share with you! BLESSINGS TO YOU!

Posted on CarenetLA Blog, Sunday, December 26, 2010
From a Real Caregiver's Perspective:

Hello,

My name is Selena Brown and I am a caregiver for CarenetLA. I believe that in order to become a good caregiver, you must first understand how to love yourself. Now I say 'understand' because you can do lots of superficial things for others, but in order to leave your mark on someone's life, you must come with a love and passion for yourself, first and foremost. Then that love and passion spills over onto your senior citizen.

I have been given the opportunity to work with a number of senior citizens and I might add that they have all enriched my life in more than one way. If I am, personally, trying to understand an aspect of my life that has been clouded by uncertainty, my senior clients say just the right words to remove the fog without me ever saying a word. This goes to show that when you are tapped into yourself and what's going on, you are then able to feel, see, recognize the needs of your senior.

Many times I get senior clients who would like for me to come back and work with them repeatedly and that is because I isolate my time and the moments that we share. I give my senior clients the time that they need with me and all other things that are happening in my life is placed on the back burner. It is their time now and they deserve to have my full attention. I understand that all the senior citizens that I am called to work with by Carenetla, are different. Some may be having a bad day because of an illness, disease, or just some family hiccup, but that's when I become sensitive to those situations and balance what I say and do to accommodate those moments in time. There is something inside you that turns on and off, a skill that is not taught, but rather expressed. When you are on, then your senior, who has lived in this life for many years can tap into it. I have been told that I have an old soul and maybe that's so, but when I give of myself truthfully and step down off my box and onto their level, I feel and play out their story in my mind, body, and spirit. Then that is what creates an endless relationship worth revisiting.

So...I am no guru on how to be an outstanding caregiver to your senior citizens, but just an active voice, living in the moment with each of my senior clients. I relive their lives, their stories, their romances, their heartaches, and their rediscovery, to ultimately become a better human-being.

We live on connections, whether the connections between two individuals are joined by age similarities or not. If we love and understand ourselves, then we become transparent and allow them (senior clients) the opportunity to have the last word in the moment.

Thank you,

Selena Brown

My Christmas Prayer to Senior Citizens All Around the World

Dear Senior Citizens Around the World,
Well, it's that time of year again to share our happy memories, open gifts galore, and eat a great meal with the ones we love. I pray that all the senior citizens around the world have someone to share this special time with, if they celebrate Christmas.

It's also a day more than just about the gifts. It's really about love, caring, and support for one another regardless of age, color, status, or religion. It's about giving a BIG Happy Birthday to Jesus Christ, who, in Christianity celebrates on this very day of December 25th.

I hope and pray that all of the senior citizens have a warm place to be this holiday and there is food ready to be served to them. I pray that they are happy and comfortable in the stage of life they're in. I also hope and pray that they will have many more Christmas holidays to come, surrounded by good memories of what occurred today.
I do also pray for those in this life who don't remember as much, but breathe as we all do another day, sitting idle in the misty fog of Alzheimer's disease. I pray for those who are in the nursing facilities, wondering where their family is and how they are doing this Christmas. I even pray for the dogs and cats that keep them company on this holiday.  I pray for all of my fellow Veterans who have served in the U.S Military in combat and non-combat situations. Thank you...

I send this Christmas Prayer to all the senior citizens around the world for just being you...
With love,
Selena Brown

As Promised: LIVE Interview with Retired 90 Year Old Accountant, Now Viola Player!

Hello Everyone,

I have been busy preparing the first LIVE Interview for TheOldFolksKnowBest.com and can now announce that it is here and ready!

Two weeks ago, I had the special opportunity to sit down with, Mr. Ben Cott, a retired 90 year old accountant, now playing the viola, to see what inspired this drive in him. At 90 years old, I want to be as active and productive as he is. However, the reason why I had to share this with you is because, there are many people who are retiring soon and they have reached senior age. They may be wondering what it is out there beyond the job they held for so many years, that they could discover. Well, this gentleman speaks in the Interview below of how he came to find a new passion for the viola.

Take a listen and share you thoughts. If you are a member of Youtube, you can comment on this video as well. I believe Mr. Ben Cott would love to hear your positive feedback. Give A Little is our key focus going into the New Year, so don't forget to give positive feedback!

Happy Holidays!

Have A Safe and Joyous Thanksgiving and Turkey Day!

On tomorrow, November 25th, families all over the United States will be celebrating Thanksgiving or what I like to call, TURKEY DAY! It's a time to look around the table at all the family and friends we have in our lives. It's a time to reflect on what we are grateful for most and what we can do better the next time to be even more grateful.

There will be many senior citizens in nursing facilities and other places alike, who will be without family. I hope that you will keep these unknown senior citizens in your prayers as you enjoy your Thanksgiving. Everyone needs to be prayed for sometimes and I will do the same.

Don't forget to tell that special senior citizen in your life, how much you love them and appreciate all that they have sacrificed for you and the family.

I want to send a 'Thank you' on behalf of TheOldFolksKnowBest.com to all my subscribers and guests who have come to read and learn something new on my site.

Holiday Gift For The Grand-kids -- Hop-A-Long's Schoolhouse Holiday Bonus Package

I was contacted by the creator of Hop-A-Long's Schoolhouse to share their educational products with my senior citizen community who may be looking for that very special gift this holiday season for the grand-kids.

This is what they had to say about their products, Hop-A-Long's Schoolhouse:
Our products have been field tested with thousands of children and were created by a group of educators.  The goal of our products is to help teach children to be good caretakers of the planet.  The DVD features literacy, science, environmental awareness, character building, music, dancing and lots of laughter.
Here's what some moms are saying about their products. I was so impressed how their children were so attentive from reading about their experiences with this product. I listed a couple of great reviews here that you can copy and paste into your browser to go over:

Cooking Tip: How To Make Sure Your Soft-Boiled Egg Doesn't Leak the Good Stuff!

On Friday, I had the opportunity to help a great senior couple in their home with breakfast and other little household chores. However, what really motivated this post was the great, little, cooking tip given by Mrs. D., who does all the cooking since her husband, age 92, has been living with Alzheimer's Disease. Mrs. D. told me that when she was younger, she loved to cook and learned from a cooking school that in order to make sure that her soft-boiled eggs doesn't leak the white part of the egg, while being placed into the hot water, she puts a little lemon or lime in the water. The citrus from the lemon or lime keeps the egg whites from bubbling out of the eggs in case it is cracked during the boiling process! Wow, huh! I never knew that!

How do you make sure your soft-boiled egg doesn't leak the good stuff?

*Place a piece of LEMON or LIME in your boiling water

Bon Appétit!

Playing Gin Rummy And Winning At Ninety (90) Years Old

On Sunday (last night), I had the opportunity to share some time with a strong woman of 90 years old, Mrs. Marje. As soon as I came into the house, her daughter asked me if I knew how to play Gin Rummy and I said my other relatives used to play when I was a little girl. I barely played, but could remember if she refreshed my memory. :)

And...that's exactly what Mrs. Marje did. She gave me the rules as we dove right into the first hand. I kept score. I didn't know what to expect because I had not played in a while. However, as the games went on and she was 200 to my measley 65, I soon learned that I need to catch on quickly. It soon became a competition and I was eager to win.

In the final hand before it was time for her to eat dinner, she sealed the deal and I was close, but no cigar! She won 525 to my 425. She walked right into the 500 winner's circle and left me in the dust. I told her that I would have to come over there and play her more sometimes. She was great, with comedic gestures throughout. I felt as if I was playing one of my peers the way we were babbling back and forth. It was great!

With that being said, if you want to learn how to play Gin Rummy and not face the terrible defeat that I experienced with my senior client, Mrs. Marje, then hop on over to Wikipedia to get the inside scoop on how to play the game. I realized while playing the game, how mental and strategic it really is. Gin Rummy keeps the mind young and you thinking.

How many people can actually say they take the time to just listen? Personally, I can sometimes be a jumping bean full of thoughts, ideas, what-ifs, but there is one thing I can't get enough of and that's listening to my senior clients. On tonight I had the opportunity to spend some time with a Japanese client, Mrs. K, who is 90 something years old and was just needing someone to listen.

Seniors are smarter and even more alert than some think. They want to share their worries, concerns, and even get our opinions. All we have to do is give them some time and a chance to share. To see Mrs. K, laying there ready for bed and then out of nowhere begin to talk about how she felt about leaving her home to go into a rest home, she was so worried about where her furniture would go, her clothes, and even all the little things she wanted to give to some of her friends, but most of all she wouldn't have us to "spoil her" as we do (her caregivers). I was coming to tears inside just listening to her spill her worries and then letting her know that the rest home is actually a great option being that it would give her a chance to do activities with people of her age, she would go on outings, see some of her Japanese friends who are already there, and her family can still come by.

There was two things that made me tear even more inside....first, she asked me would I come visit her? I told her I sure would and I would love to....second, she said, "Thank you for listening to me."

I believe we all want someone to just listen. Communication in life between two parties, as intense as politics to relationships with family, friends, and others in general would be simply a wonderful learning experience.

Talk with you soon,

A Vase of Flowers

I've heard the saying time and time again, "Give me my flowers while I'm still alive".

It's so sad to see how many flowers are put on gravesites each year and the dead is unable to smell or see them. Flowers become the way we say, "I'm sorry..." or "I wish I would have..." or "Give me another chance to...", to attempt to heal all of our own inconsistencies.

However, on the sunny side, if you're reading this you have a second chance. The grandparent, the mom or dad, the aunt or uncle, the sister or brother, the seniors in all of these categories, need to see your fresh flowers of love, friendship, and blessings.

Yes, flowers will die and there will be time for a new dozen or so...but one piece still remains and that's the mold that we put them in to see them from afar. It's the vase...the vase for flowers that remain, ready to hold the next special gift of flowers.

Since, vases are known to break, there is one solution to this problem that your senior relative, friend, or lover, will approve of...and maybe even love....

Rubber Vase - large - Turquoise  $40 in stock
Supplied by Creative Danes

So...don't wait until the day comes when that senior has taken their last breath to give them a vase of flowers. Make sure that time is now. Many Blessings and Peace to you. -Selena

Grandma Moses Leaves A Legacy

Here's a special lady I just had to tell you about. I ran across her story while in the elevator of an Assisted Living establishment where I go to help a senior twice a week in the early mornings.

While standing in the elevator I found myself looking over to see the phrase "Grandma Moses" plastered over the picture of a little old lady. I wondered why someone would give her such a name and realized why.

Her real name was Anna Mary Robertson Moses (September 7, 1860 – December 13, 1961) As you can see by her years living on earth, she lived to see 101 years old, but that's not the kicker! This very special lady was an American Folk artist and decided to change her career to this at an advanced age in her seventies when the arthritis set in. While many people today look to retire with what money they can, Anna, found herself pursuing another endeavor in the arts that became very noticed and even remembered to this day.

I find myself speaking with more seniors today who believe that they are at the end of their road and no one really cares anymore. However, that is not the case and as we can see from "Grandma Moses", she left a legacy behind for us all to remember her by even if she probably didn't think so.

According to Wikipedia, here are some of Grandma Moses legacies:

  • A 1942 piece, The Old Checkered House, 1862 was appraised at the Memphis 2004 Antiques Roadshow. The painting was a summer scene in Geneva, New York, not as common as her winter landscapes. Originally purchased in the 1940s for under $10, the piece was assigned an insurance value of $60,000 by the appraiser, Alan Fausel.
  • Another of her paintings, Fourth of July, was given by Otto Kallir to the White House and still hangs there today.
  • The character Granny on the popular 1960s rural comedy television series The Beverly Hillbillies was named Daisy Moses as an homage to Grandma Moses, who died shortly before the series began. She is buried in Hoosick Falls, New York.
  • Norman Rockwell, who, for a time, lived in Arlington, Vermont, was a friend of Grandma Moses who lived in nearby Eagle Bridge, New York. Grandma Moses also appears on the far left edge in the Norman Rockwell painting Christmas Homecoming, which was printed on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post of December 25, 1948.
  • A U.S. commemorative stamp was issued in her honor in 1969.
If you know anything about the Beverly Hillbillies, who knew that the Granny character was named as reverence paid to Grandma Moses? AMAZING!!!

When the next time you see your grandma or grandpa ask them how life was back when. Ask then how they viewed life and opportunity. Maybe their answers will surprise you like the life of Anna Mary Robertson Moses.

You're never to old to be someone to somebody. -Selena

Washing Man's Best Friend

No matter how old a man gets, he will always stand by and protect his best friend the DOG! His furry friend can bite up all his socks, make babies with the next-door neighbor's pooch, or run-down the local mailman. He is still an angel. Since this holds true from a male perspective, there is one thing that the woman of the house may want to put a stop to and that's a DIRTY, SMELLY, DOG!

Every Saturday I arrive early to my senior client's home just to walk his beautiful furry dog, Archie. He is full of life and energy. Sometimes we even take a walk until I tire him out....RIGHT!

Although I absolutely LOVE Archie the dog, I would like to help him smell better too! I also know that Mr. C. has the doggie mobile come by to wash his dog, but in between those appointments, Archie is a mess! So I'm recommending for Mr. C's Archie and ANY doggie out there who needs a maintenance wash a week to buy Spa Dog - Puppy Suds!

This is available for purchase right here and now from my blog here!

Spa Dog-Puppy Suds  $13

It's so great because its chemical free and better for the dog and since you will be making your senior's life easier, it's better for them too!

You Can't Keep An Old Guy From His Chess!

I was inspired by this great Pixar video here. (QuickTime 5 required)

If you're the type who enjoys a good challenge, then chess is your game. While looking for a new product to add to my OpenSky Shop, I came across a hand-made chess set, particularly perfect for the special senior gentleman in your life. You can't keep an old guy from his chess! This chess set is special because all of the detail was done by hand, not some packaged set. Someone took their time to create every piece. I personally recommend this chess set and what a great time you will have getting beat by your senior opponent!

Order your hand-made chess set from my blog today!

Thanks,

What Can We Learn From Survivors Of The Great Depression

Many of our senior citizens made it through The Great Depression in one piece to go on and become businessmen, entrepreneurs, actors, actresses, great teachers, speakers, etc. However, in 2010, we are in another form of depression with our economy and many people around the country act as if its the end of the world. It sometimes makes me wonder how the older folks of the past were able to sustain themselves and make things happen even in a time of oblivion. They really had "nothing", but they found a way to make something out of nothing. Even today, I hear on the news so many people complaining about what they don't have without taking a moment to see what they can do with what's within themselves. We have so much knowledge and talents that someone in this life needs from us and that's what a lot of our senior citizens today did during the Great Depression. They used what they had until better opportunities came to the forefront.

So, the next time you feel like complaining or worrying about how the economy has thrown you a bad hand, you should speak with a senior citizen who lived through The Great Depression to hear what low is really all about and how he or she made it through. The cycle continues in this life, so this will not be the last of loss until the earth gets tired of us all once again.

Live life as it is and use the gifts and talents that you have within yourself to create something out of nothing. -Selena

Three Fabulous Aprons For Grandma At Any Age!

When Sunday dinner roles around, there's nothing more special than eating grandma's homemade cooking. She's a pro at the fried chicken, catfish, collard greens, sweet potato pie, and lets not forget the corn bread. Grandma even knows how to dress up the table so nice and bring in all the family to celebrate another Sunday's best.

I realized then that Grandmas all over the world needed a special apron to wear and look fabulous in while preparing that special meal for you and yours.

I found these three AMAZING Aprons for cooking, cleaning, gardening or doing crafts while on OpenSky!

You can buy it right here from my blog, The Old Folks Know Best, by clicking the Add To Cart button below.

Celebrate National Senior Citizen's Day on August 21st!

National Senior Citizen's Day celebrates the most special people in the whole world. They are our senior citizens we look to for all the wisdom, guidance, and love that we lack in our own lives. They have been our guardians and the shoulder for us to cry on.

Read the very expressive words of our late President of the United States, Ronald Reagan establishing this day:

Proclamation 5847 -- National Senior Citizens Day, 1988

August 19, 1988

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

Throughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families, our communities, and our country. That remains true today, and gives us ample reason this year to reserve a special day in honor of the senior citizens who mean so much to our land.

With improved health care and more years of productivity, older citizens are reinforcing their historical roles as leaders and as links with our patrimony and sense of purpose as individuals and as a Nation. Many older people are embarking on second careers, giving younger Americans a fine example of responsibility, resourcefulness, competence, and determination. And more than 4.5 million senior citizens are serving as volunteers in various programs and projects that benefit every sector of society. Wherever the need exists, older people are making their presence felt -- for their own good and that of others.

For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older -- places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.

The Congress, by House Joint Resolution 138, has designated August 21, 1988, as "National Senior Citizens Day" and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this event.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim August 21, 1988, as National Senior Citizens Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this nineteenth day of August, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirteenth.

Ronald Reagan
