I really enjoyed my first contest here at TheOldFolksKnowBest.com that I am ready and geared up to do the next one! This contest will help me to understand, who in your life you are thankful for and they must be of SENIOR AGE. This is the peak time when most senior citizens feel that they are not wanted and no one cares for them while they live in nursing facilities and even at home.

I've decided for the month of November to make this a random drawing and to give you the choice in your $50 Visa Gift Card Win (FREE MONEY)! The winner will have the option to keep the $50 Cash for themselves or DONATE it to the Charity Of Their Choice! I will match the $50 Cash and give it once again to the charity of choice this holiday season with The Old Folks Know Best, St. Vincent's Meals on Wheels, in their name.

  1. Yay! I love your contests - I decided to do my contest (when I have 100 followers) based on yours!

I started life 2 grandparents short - my maternal grandmother died of cancer when my mother was 16, and my paternal grandparents divorced before I was born. That didn't stop my remaining grandparents from supplying all the love and care I needed though. My paternal grandmother lived right next door and she was always there when we needed her, and my maternal grandfather watched my sister and I just as often, and he would take us out to his small greenhouse and teach us how to talk to plants and make them grow.

My grandfather died in 2007 after complications with pneumonia, and my grandmother died October 4th of this year after a brain hemorrhage. I never got to say a last goodbye to either of them while they were still alive.

But while I mourned the loss of my grandmother, I realized that I was actually very lucky. She had been present in May of this year when my boyfriend of three years proposed - as were his grandparents.

So I am most thankful for my fiance's grandparents Eva and Ed because since the first day they met me (which was actually the weekend my grandfather died) they have treated me like their own flesh and blood, and helped us get through the good and the bad, and were there for me after my grandmother died.

  2. @Yllsa - You go lady! Congratulations on your engagement as well! It's so great to hear how there is someone or two, there to pick up the pieces. It can be very devastating when you lose someone whom you love so dearly, but when there is no one there to help you through it, you feel absolutely lost. Well, I personally felt that way for sometime when my grandmother died of pneumonia after a very intense surgery from a fall. She came through the surgery just fine, but the after-affect was pneumonia. I wish I was there to say goodbye. I found out the news when I came home for the holidays from the U.S. Army. It felt unreal. It was hard to get over that. I even saw her in my dreams for some time after. She was there, live in living color, pinching me on my side because I said something really mean in my dream :) She got me even in my dream...isn't that something? Okay, Yllsa, you have been entered in this month's random drawing, GOOD LUCK! -Selena

  7. I am thankful for my paternal grandmother because she was such an inspiration for my upbringing and life. My sister and used to go nature walks with them and watch movies together which I really enjoyed. She converted her work room into the "Love Room". In this she she hung pictures of all her progeny; it inspired me to write a poem about love which she hung in there. Finally she got me addicted to her shortening bread cookies. Apparently he good cooking skills did not come quickly, as my grandfather would say.

  14. I am most thankful for my mother. No matter what has happened in my life she remains my constant. I remember being little and working for charity with her. Or buying school supplies for church families that didn't have money. All anonymously, but I saw it and it taught me very important lessons. We can't be more different but she still loves and accepts me for who I am and encourages me even today as an adult.
