HealtheFolk Friday: Water Aerobics for Senior Citizens

Welcome to another HealtheFolk Friday where today we will share with you the benefits of Water Aerobics. I was with a friend on yesterday and she loves sharing all the fun activities that she's apart of and she is in her 60s and absolutely loves her water aerobics class every week.

I have heard a lot of about this type of exercise and how it is a lot more easier for senior citizens to work out their muscles.  Here are also some benefits to water aerobics:
Water Exercise is especially suited to:
- people attempting to regain strength and flexibility after an injury or surgery,
- sedentary people just starting an exercise program,
- individuals wanting to lose weight and gain muscle tone,
- fitness enthusiasts and athletes seeking to maintain or increase their fitness level, and
- aquatic therapists and exercise instructors looking to expand their knowledge of water exercise.

I found a great video explaining the benefits of water aerobics for senior citizens, which you can watch here or below this post!

The summer is almost officially here in a couple more weeks, so if you're into staying fit or getting fit, I would recommend finding your local YMCA or community pool where there are classes and get started! I'm going to go myself along with my friend to experience it for myself! YAY!

To a healthier you in 2011,
Selena

Walk-In Tubs: What to Look For

I was reading an article in the Parade today and came across 5 major considerations you should take if you're considering a Walk-in Tub purchase.

1. Quality - Look for one that's 100% leakproof and mold-resistant, full metal frame construction and one that's American made.

2. Warranty - Ask for a lifetime "no leak guarantee" and the best tubs offer a lifetime warranty on the tub itself.

3. Pain Relieving Therapy - Find a tub that has both water and air jet therapy to soak away your aches and pains. Look for Dual-Zone jets.

4. Comfort - Ergonomic design, easy-to-reach controls.

5. Endorsements - Only consider tubs that are UL or ETL listed. Also look for a tub certified by NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) Research Center.

Monday Motivation: When You're Feeling Down

Sometimes we feel down on ourselves and it's only human to feel this way. However, there are little unique ways of picking ourselves up and brushing ourselves off to begin again.

For this Monday Motivation, I wanted to share a video that you can go to and watch anytime this week or thereafter when you're feeling down on your luck or on life in general.

Sometimes all it takes is a good video of inspiration to make things all better. Have a safe week and we'll talk soon, Selena

When Life has you feeling Down, Keep these Words in Mind...

Sunday Inspiration: People for a Season or Lifetime

It is always a pleasure to meet new people. We are the people who make the world go round. We each possess so much wisdom and are fortunate enough to have different experiences to share with others. However, as I have gotten older and will be one year older this coming Thursday, June 9th, I have realized that people come into our lives for a season or a lifetime.

Those people who are like winter, spring, summer, and fall, possess the answers to the questions that we need answered. They also help us to get over some obstacle or overcome some experience in our life. Then there are our lifetime circle of friends who come in and stay in and never let go even if they are all the way across the country or in another country. They are our lifetime partners or supporting fans.

As we continue to get older and our look changes, our hair becomes grey or blonde, and we step into a new phase of life, we really discover who those people in our lives really were and why they were around in the first place.

For this Sunday Inspiration, I wanted to share a very pleasant video brought to you by OneTrueMedia.com on how people come into your life for a reason.

I hope it will open your eyes to the people you have in your life, currently. I hope you will ask yourself why they are there and those that are needing to leave your life, why you are still holding on to them when they should be freed. We are loved always by God and know that he wants the best for you at any age in life, you are presently.

Thank you for being apart of my life,
Selena

Great Recipe: Watermelon Rind Preserves - Fat Free Vegan

Sometimes I find unique recipes and this one was sent to me by FatFreeVegan.com and I just had to share it with my senior citizens. I know there's some seniors out there who still can their own preserves and this looks yummy for toast anytime of day! :D

The full recipe is below, but to learn about the backstory to it all in her blog post, visit: FatFreeVegan.com!

Watermelon Rind Preserves

Ingredients

  • 6 – 8 cups watermelon rind
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon alum
  • 1/2 tablespoon powdered ginger
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Trim most pink and all of the green from watermelon rind. Cut into 1/2-inch cubes.
  2. Dissolve 1/2 cup salt in 1/2 gallon of water. Add rind, cover, and allow to soak overnight. Drain and rinse well. Cover with clear water and allow to stand for 1 hour.
  3. Prepare alum bath and ginger tea. Add alum to 1/2 gallon of water and bring to a boil. In another large pot, add ginger to 1/2 gallon of water and bring to a boil.
  4. When alum bath is boiling, add drained watermelon rind and cook for 5 minutes. Drain and rinse. Then pour rind into ginger tea and cook until it returns to a full boil, about 10 minutes.
  5. While rind is in ginger tea, prepare the syrup. Mix sugar and 1 1/2 cups water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer uncovered until rind is ready to be removed from ginger tea. With a slotted spoon or colander, remove the rind from the ginger tea, draining it completely, and place it in the syrup. Increase heat to bring the syrup to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, until rind is translucent, about 30-40 minutes. (You may add a tablespoon or two of ginger tea if it gets too thick, though I didn’t find this necessary.)
  6. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the rind to sterilized jars. Continue to boil the syrup until it is about the consistency of maple syrup. Carefully pour the syrup over the rind, filling the jars to within 1/2-inch of tops. Make sure the rims of the jars are clean, cover with sterilized lids, and tighten bands. Reserve any leftover syrup for use in tea or on pancakes or waffles. Allow jars to cool and check seals. (Lids should “pop” as they cool.) Refrigerate any jars that do not have a tight seal.

Note

I’m no canning expert, so if you attempt this recipe, I recommend doing some research on canning first to make sure that the preserves will not spoil. Just to be on the safe side, I am keeping my jars in the refrigerator.
Preparation time: 2 hour(s) 30 minutes (plus soaking time) | Cooking time: 1 hour(s)
Number of servings (yield): about 3 1/2 pints

HealtheFolk Friday: Teeth and Gum Health

Sometimes we all must go back to the basics and the basics for this HealtheFolk Friday concentrates on good Teeth Health or "How to brush properly to keep our teeth and gums healthy."

Most senior citizens as they get older have a hard time brushing their teeth properly. The dentist says to brush your teeth for 2 minutes and don't forget the back teeth in the mouth and that is a job in itself. So, here is a great video to explain to you what the dentist is trying to say and why :D  -Selena
